Coffee Beans vs. Espresso Beans: What’s the Difference?

If you’re a coffee lover, you may have noticed that some bags of beans are labeled “coffee beans” while others say “espresso beans.” But what’s the difference? Are espresso beans a special variety, or is it just marketing? Let’s break it down.

1. The Beans Themselves

Technically, coffee and espresso beans come from the same plant—either Arabica or Robusta. There’s no such thing as a special “espresso bean” variety. The key difference lies in how the beans are roasted, ground, and brewed.

2. Roasting Differences

  • Coffee Beans: Typically roasted light to medium for standard drip coffee, pour-over, or cold brew. Lighter roasts preserve acidity and highlight the bean’s unique flavors.

  • Espresso Beans: Usually roasted medium to dark to enhance bold, rich flavors. The darker roast reduces acidity and creates a smooth, caramelized taste ideal for espresso brewing.

3. Grind Size & Brewing Method

  • Coffee Beans: Ground coarser for methods like drip coffee makers or French presses. A coarser grind prevents over-extraction, which can make coffee taste bitter.

  • Espresso Beans: Ground much finer to allow high-pressure extraction in espresso machines. The fine grind helps create a concentrated, rich shot with a signature crema on top.

4. Caffeine Content

Contrary to popular belief, espresso doesn’t necessarily have more caffeine than regular coffee. While a single espresso shot has about 63 mg of caffeine, an 8-ounce cup of drip coffee contains 95 mg or more. However, since espresso is consumed in smaller amounts, it’s often perceived as stronger.

5. Can You Use Coffee Beans for Espresso?

Yes! Any coffee bean can technically be used to make espresso, but beans labeled “espresso” are specifically roasted and blended to taste best when brewed under high pressure. If you use light-roasted coffee beans for espresso, the result may be overly acidic or sour.
